Laundering:
- Machine Washable (warm or hot water)
- No Bleach
- No fabric Softeners
Detergents:
Detergents can be harsh on your babby's skin, the environment and your cloth diapers. many detergents thathave the reputation as being the best for laundering baby products contain chemicals that are skin irritants and that do not break down once they leaveyour washing machine. we reccomend using Planet or Country Save due to their mild ingredients that biodegrade.
Tips and Tidbits:
- The best way to brighten and freshen a stained diaper is to hang out in the sun for a few hours
- Using vinegar in the final rinse with your cloth diapers can help freshen and soften, but there is some talk about the vinegar reducing the waterproofing capabilities of the PUL covers -- use with caution on covers
- Using an enzyme stain and odor remover, like Bac-Out by BioKleen, in a prewash or spraying on each diaper can hlep to eliminate odorsand stains, but again there are a few reports that this can have negative effects on the PUL covers -- use with caution on covers.
- Baking Soda has also been found to be helpful
- If your diapers are retaining heavy odors even after being laundered they may need to be stripped
Stripping Cloth Diapers:
If your cloth diapers are retaining heavy odors, they may have detergents and oils builtup on them. This tends to happen more with synthetic materials, but occasionally can occur with natural materials. You will also need to strip your diapers if they are leaking or not absorbing as well as they used to. Below are a few methods of stripping diapers.
- Wash It Out -- Try running your diapers through the washing machine without using any detergent in the hottest water setting and giving them an extra rinse.
- Bac-Out -- Wash diapers with Bac-Out and hot water and give them an extra rinse or two.
- Baking Soda -- add 1/2 cup to 1 cup to the wash cycle and rinse until you no longer see bubbles.
- Dishwashing Liquid -- Use a good grease cutting dishwashing liquid, preferrably not one based on petroleum produts, we like ECOpath dishwashing liquid in lemongrass scent. You can either use a couple of squirts in the wash cycle or scrub a bit into each diaper, then rinse until you no longer see bubbles.
